‘Top Dog’ - Designed with Animals in Mind

A nationwide tour of this Contemporary Craft exhibition with a difference begins on Friday 16th November 2007

We humans all appreciate good design so why not for our four (and two) legged friends as well?

Dog toy by Donna Wilson‘Top Dog’ explores craft and design for the pet and animal world in a light hearted and appealing exhibition full of surprises.

Over 20 British makers have used their flair and imagination to create new and stylish work - ranging from kennels, bowls, blankets and collars to bird tables, pet pods and animal shelters. For most of the makers the pet and wildlife market is a completely new challenge.

Highlights include:

Andy Hazell’s memorial to Laika the space dog,
Alison Macleod’s exquisite jewelled birdcage
Val Hunt’s dog armour using recycled tin
Jeweller Gilly Langton’s collar for the Highland cow she sees through her window each morning
Willow artist Lise Bech’s pet pods
Award winning graduate Rebecca Shreeve’s hibernation blankets

Artists include Cleo Mussi, Massey & Rogers, Lise Bech, Sharon Porteous, Hannah Lamb, Donna Wilson, Suilven Plazalska, Olivia Brown, Chris Eckersley, Ruth Waller and the People Will Always Need Plates duo.

Jo Bagshaw and Julie Ann Seaman, both Yorkshire based artists, have accepted a commission to each create a contemporary kennel with a difference.

The exhibition includes a children’s play kennel for young visitors, pet resource area and large print and braille labels. A sign language ‘trail’ will highlight key words to promote deaf awareness.

The exhibition will tour nationwide from November 2007 to 2009 and future venues include
