Amphibian - Housing
Amphibians need housing that can hold moisture but can still be easily cleaned. In most cases, this means a glass or plexi glass aquarium, usually a 70 to 90 litre size.
Moisture is provided through water in either the tank itself or a container within it filled with water, or the substrate in the tank is moistened. You can supply additional moisture with a hand-held sprayer or a misting system. You will need to add a clear perforated or netting top to the terrarium / aquarium . You don’t need to worry about adding lighting or keeping the tank and its inhabitants heated as amphibians like it cool.
Because amphibians are quiet creatures, they won’t tear up an elaborately planted terrarium the way a lizard or snake might. The smaller brightly coloured frogs, look like animated jewels in a well appointed tank.
Keeping an amphibian’s tank clean is a very important aspect of keeping these creatures alive. The smaller your amphibian, the less body waste it produces and the less work it is to maintain the tank.
You have to tear down and reconstruct a 90 litre frog vivarium about twice a year.
In contrast, a large bullfrog’s tank will need daily water changes or a filtration system. The moist sphagnum moss in a salamander’s housing needs rinsing out at least every other day.
