Amphibians as Pets

Amphibians make nice pets if you like damp environments, or if you like creatures that revel in dampness, or if you want a pet who likes things wet. Because amphibians breathe partially through their skin, they must have moist, clean caging, which requires careful monitoring and frequent cleaning to avoid ammonia build-up or a bacterial bloom, or your pet dies a nasty death.

Amphibians that are seen in pet stores are usually the beautifully coloured ones and fairly small in size. You can go out and find big amphibians. Some of the aquatic blind lizards, for example, can easily reach a length 60cm, but not many people want a shy, retiring pet with the animated action and appearance of a grey rubber hose. The pet store amphibians range in size from the fist-sized horned frog to the 7.5cm redspotted newt to a 2cm dart frog. You can certainly find more exotic amphibians. Your local pet supplier should be able to buy them in for you, or you may want to see what an show can offer you.
