Amphibians - Newts - What do newts eat and feed on?
What do newts eat? Feeding newts is fairly simple however, depending on the species of your newt, you may have to try a variety of food resources. Bloodworms, frozen (thawed) or live, seem to a favourite among many newt keepers. Blooodworms and especially frozen bloodworms are quite readily available at specialist reptile and amphibian or aquarist pet shops.
Your newt diet may also consist of thin slices of fresh water fish like trout or salmon, small or chopped earthworms, brine shrimp, glass shrimp, daphnia, and freeze-dried tubifex. Floating fish, reptile or amphibian sticks can also be tried, although only a few newts accept these. Larger newts, particularly the larger Japanese fire bellied and crocodile newts, may also eat live feeder fish (guppies) if offered.
Fire bellied newts and the like do not have to be fed every day. Feeding every other day or every three days is often enough.
It will take a little experimentation on your part to find the right newt diet for your pet and how much and how often each of your newts should be fed. You can judge the feeding routine a succsess or by their growth and body condition, whether they are plump or thin and whether there is food that is being left. Spoiled food will cause a build up of toxins the water.
Newts are a good starter creature for people new to amphibians as pets as they are interesting, readily available, and do not require expensive equipment or a lot of specialized care.
