Online pet magazine.Almost everything you need to know about pet care.Amphibian - Semi aquatic amphibian terrarium or semi aquatic tankThese suggestions are designed to help you creating a terrarium suitable for semi aquatic amphibians. The information provided is to help you emulate the natural environment favoured by semi aquatic frogs, toads, salamanders and the like. If you are creating or building a semi aquatic terrarium from scratch it may be a good idea to have a divided tank, where the land area is either part of the existing tank partitioned off with a sealed plexi or glass section or a separate internal plexi or glass cube full of rocks and gravel. The section or cube can be sealed with an aquarium grade silicone sealant. The deep water section will need a ramp to enable the creature to exit the water easily. A dense piece of wood or rough slate will do the job. An alternative would be to have a (smooth) gravel ramp immersed in the watery side. The land side doesn't have to be as elaborate as in the 'terrestrial terrarium'. A carefully placed pot plant sunken into the gravel will give some interest and decoration to the 'land' is all you need. A piece of curved cork bark floating in the water will also help the creatures get out the water occasionally to bask. An aquarium plant or two finish off the water side. When you make your terrarium, the set up needs a secure cover that should be in place at all times, this should not be made of solid glass or metal; A sliding section with fine netting cover will help with ventilation and may control the necessary humidity levels. Approximately 1/3 of the volume of water in the terrarium should be removed and replaced with fresh, dechlorinated water every week or so.
