Pet Ants
Leaf cutter ants (acromyrmex octospinosus) , the most available and easiest species for the average person to keep as a pet and is native to the forests of South America . These, ‘As seen on TV’, pets require some specialist escape proof housing and careful feeding. The ants do not actually eat the leaves they cut and gather but compost them to create their own staple diet, a special and unique mycelia fungus. This fungus is grown in a ‘garden’ by the worker ants.
You can buy a starter colony with a queen ant and a section of mycelia starter ‘garden’. The size of the colony you buy is not important but the health of the queen and the ‘garden’ condition is. This will, (should), grow to a colony of a maximum of around 50,000 ants in about 18 months, with the queen, laying about 500 eggs each day and living up to 12 years.
