Aquaria - A biotope aquarium
It is always a good idea to set up a tank knowing exactly which fish it will house. Creating a biotope aquarium is one that mimics a real-life habitat and is an interesting slant on the hobby.
Imagine 650 litre aquariums that are set up as an Australian rainbow biotope, as an African river biotope, a section of Caribbean reef or an Amazon biotope River tank. There are many books and web sites on biotopes that you can use to get some fresh ideas for decorating and stocking your tank. A good pet shop or aquarists assistant should be able to tell you where the fish come from in the wild and help you set up your biotope.
The 1cm per 2 litre rule is only good for small fish. We recommend you always under-stock your aquarium, not putting more than one small fish per 10 litres. Your fish will definitely be happier, act more naturally, and probably live longer.
A well-thought out selection of fish will make your aquarium very interesting to study for hours on end, instead of minutes. Don't forget, if you can't resist a certain fish and that fish isn't compatible with your current fish stock - You can always start another aquarium!
