Ornamental Pheasants

Ornamental Pheasants as Aviary Cage or Garden Birds

Allandoo Pheasantry - Ornamental pheasants - Lady Amherst PheasantThere are many species of pheasant, many of which are 'ornamental', with brightly coloured or iridescent feathers.

Species such as Golden, Lady Amherst, Reeves and Silver are fairly common in aviculture but many others are quite rare both in captivity and in the wild. All the ornamental pheasants in the UK have been captive bred and the World Pheasant Association are working hard to reintroduce some of these birds back to the wild in their country of origin within Asia.

Allandoo Pheasantry - Ornamenta Pheasants - Himalayan Monal PheasantMost Ornamental Pheasants are very hardy and only need a very basic shelter. The Eared Pheasants and Himalayan Monals in particular seem to enjoy inclement weather.

There are a few birds which do require heat during the winter, these include the Crested Firebacks and Peacock Pheasants both of which come from tropical rainforests.

All of the species of ornamental pheasant can be fed with ordinary Game bird pellets. Although ornamental pheasants will manage perfectly well with only pellets they do enjoy grains, berries and other fruit, nuts and greens. Live food is also appreciated by some, especially the Peacock Pheasants.

Allandoo Pheasantry - Ornamenta Pheasants - Siamese Fireback PheasantPheasants are normally fairly quiet birds and often become tame enough to eat from your hand with only a little encouragement. If you have space for an aviary it would be hard to find a more suitable bird to brighten up your day than one of the varieties of ornamental pheasants.
