Chinchilla - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long will my  pet Chinchilla live?
A. This answer varies from place to place, but the most common answer is that they live anywhere from 10-25 years. That depends of course, how well they are cared for and the quality of chinchilla that you buy.

Q. Is it okay to have a pet Chinchilla around small children?
A. They have a super temperament for everyone. Very rarely will you ever hear of a chinchilla biting someone. Chinchillas are very easily tamed and will quickly get used to you and your family. This is why they have become such a popular pet. Chinchillas are great pets for families.

Q. What can I feed my pet Chinchilla?
A. You should read our section on Chinchilla diet as this gives you most of the general dietary care information that you need to keep your pet happy and in good shape.

Q. How much exercise does my pet Chinchilla need?
A.
Exercising your chinchilla is very important. We suggest that you get an exercise wheel. Then your Chinchilla will get enough exercise, especially if you don't have time supervise exercise outside the cage. Most chinchillas love wheels and will run around on them quite happily until they wear themselves out! Chinchillas are mainly nocturnal animals, so they sleep through most of the afternoon and then are awake during the evenings. Although they will go along with it, we don't suggest waking them up for exercise too often during the day, unless you make it part of a routine.

Q. Do chinchillas get along well with other pets?
A.
Some Chinchillas will get along with other animals, but use some common sense in this area! You will just have to experiment a little bit and see what kind of reaction you get from the two animals. If you have a huge dog that catches rabbits and eats them whole or if your cat is biting and scratching at the cage, then you should make sure you keep them away from each other. Then I wouldn't suggest you mix them. I would place the cage where your other pet can see into the cage and just watch how the two react to each other.
