Dogs -Dental care
Good dental care is essential to your dog 's general health. Domestic pets tend to live longer than their wild cousins so we need to care for their teeth. Your dog can suffer from tooth ache, gum infections and plaque, just as we humans do. Start a teeth cleaning regime as early as possible. Little and often is the key to a successful relationship with your dog as it is not likely to enjoy the attention!
Do not be tempted to use human toothpaste this is not suitable for puppy's or dogs. Buy a toothbrush and toothpaste designed for animals, these have a suitable flavour. These special toothpastes can be swallowed. This will be kinder to the dog 's stomach if swallowed and they aren't as frothy, making it less uncomfortable for your pet. Your dog won't be able to rinse and spit.
If you really can't brush your dog's teeth there are gels or chews which are specially designed to help keep your pet's teeth clean. Diet is an important factor in maintaining healthy teeth and gums, but this is not a solution on its own. Dental disease is 100% preventable but in spite of this nearly 60% of dogs over the age of three have some form of dental disease.
