Dogs - Food and Feeding
Choosing the right food for your dog is really important. We recommend you feed your dog a quality, dry, complete meal. These meals have been developed to meet the nutritional needs of your dog. They have been formulated to give your dog all the fibre and nutrients it needs to maintain proper growth, stamina levels and overall condition for a long healthy life. There is no need to add nutritional supplements or human (scraps) food. These are going to do more harm than good and likely to just add unwelcome weight to your dog.
If you are adopting an adult dog, try to find out what your dog has been eating previously and continue feeding the same type of food for a day or two. If you want to change the diet to a complete mix then do it gradually over the next week or so by increasing the proportions of the new food with the old to make your dog's transition as easy on its digestive system as possible. The complete mixes also help maintain weight control, avoiding obesity and associated complications. A high quality complete dry dog food is good for your dog; it also makes for smaller firmer poops. (Easier to pick up!).
Also with the complete type dog food it is unnecessary to feed your dog bones of any type. Dog chews and 'pig's ears' are ok in moderation. The only liquid you should be giving your dog to drink is fresh tap water. Don’t let your dog drink from puddles or streams.
For hygiene reasons, all your dog's dishes should be washed separately from the rest of the household dishes.
