Mice - Frequently asked questions
Q. My mouse bites me when I pick it up. What can I do?
A. For the inexperienced handler or a mouse that is difficult to pick up or acts like is might bite you, try picking it up by using a small glass jar, plastic tube or container. You can scoop up the mouse and cover the opening with your other hand, tilting the jar so that the mouse ends up on your hand.
Q. Why does my mouse have funny lumps on her feet?
A. Mice don't have feet like us with one flat part to walk on, they have four or five 'walking pads' on the bottom of their little feet that make it easy for them to get a grip, for them to run and climb over all sorts of surfaces.
Q. My mouse looks like he is fat, is this because he is getting old.
A. An adult mouse should weigh no more than 30 grammes - age shouldn't be a factor. If you are worried about his weight firstly try and encourage more exercise with a mouse wheel and/or tubes like the ones that come with Rotastak housing.
Q. My brother has a pet rat can I keep the mouse that I am thinking of buying in the same cage?
A. No. definitely not, mice and rats do not get on at all well. Your mouse will be stressed if you keep it in the same room as a pet rat.
