There are many colours and varieties of pet rabbit breeds available today from rabbit breeders and good pet shops. Most people seem to prefer buying the small, dwarf rabbits like the Netherlands dwarf. Then the next most popular seem to be the medium sized rabbit breeds like the Dutch, English and Dwarf lop as these are appealing to look at, docile and intelligent. The dwarf lop seems to make a particularly good house rabbit and despite being called 'Dwarf', can grow quite big! The larger rabbit breeds and giant breeds like the New Zealand White, Flemish Giant and Californian do not make very good pets for small children as they can be quite aggressive towards small people! Plus they are generally too big to handle. Amongs the more unusual pet rabbit breeds is the Lion Head rabbit, which as its name suggests has a Leo look about it. There are rabbits with unusual fur types, like the rex breeds, whose fur are short and have a certain (peculiar) sheen to it. The Angora rabbit has long soft fur that is more like fine hair. Angora rabbits require a lot of grooming and their housing litter has to be kept scrupulously clean to avoid staining their fur, so are not really suitable pets for children.
