Rabbits - Handling

Rabbit handling is easy and can be relaxing. It is also the key to good relations with your rabbit. Once they are tame, handling your rabbit will be a happy experience for both you and your pet. Remember rabbits are a social animal by nature and like company. You are a substitute for a warren full of other rabbits! Your pet rabbit may not like to being handled too often but may sit on your lap voluntarily if you sit on the floor next to it. Our daughter's house trained rabbit will come to you and jump up on your lap for a tickle and may even fall asleep there. Rabbits love being petted, stroked and gently scratched on the head, behind the ears and shoulders. Your rabbit might not be too keen on being touched on the hind quarters. If you are going to pick your rabbit up, place one hand under the chest between the forelegs and the other right under the bottom to take all the weight, gently lifting up, holding gently but firmly.

Hold your rabbit close to you and sit down so that there is not such a long drop to the floor if your rabbit breaks loose or you do happen to drop the rabbit. Please never pick your rabbit up by the ears! You wouldn't like it, neither will your rabbit.
