Rats - Cages

Whether you are getting a new rat or just re-homing a current friend, the type of rat cage you will choose depends on your situation and where you are going to keep your pet. The two main kinds are wire and Perspex or glass. You can build your own wire cage but for the cost you might as well buy one in already made.

The factors that will favour the Perspex or glass type over the wire are: the space available, a draughty situation and having a pet cat or similar carnivorous animal around. The rat’s tail will be safe from protruding through wire gaps. If you are breeding or planning on breeding. The babies can’t squeeze between bars!

Make sure if you choose Perspex or glass that the lid is well vented but really secure as rats are great escape artists.

Black and white rat The disadvantages of a Perspex or glass rat cage over a wire pet rat cage are: The cage will need cleaning out more often than a wire cage due to the build up of dampness and ammonia from the rats’ urine. The glass cage will be heavy, two adult rats will need at least a 100 litre tank, and you guessed it – breakable! The bigger the tank the dearer it will be too.

Wire rat cages are the best option for most pet rat owners. But do avoid painted or galvanised wires as these may contain poisonous elements, plain stainless steel, anodised or powder coated wire are fine. With a wire rat cage there is plenty of ventilation and they can be multi level, saving floor space. You will probably find that your pet will find the highest available level space to sleep. It is also fun to watch your pet climb the bars (and get a tummy tickle). It is also easy to affix accessories to the wires. Just remember if a rat can get its head through a gap – its body can follow! Don’t choose a pet rat cage with a wire bottom or tiers that little feet can get caught in, or if you do cover the wire with another porous material (to prevent pee puddles!)

Avoid wood at all costs as rats are gnawing creatures and can even attack a perfectly flat wooden surface. They will escape. Whether you choose Perspex, glass or wire cage, a happy home makes for a happy rat!
