Reptiles - Tortoise
The land tortoise Genus Geochelone, need help and consideration if they are to survive as species.
There are many different species of tortoise available. The Spur-thighed tortoise,
Horsfields tortoise and Hermann's tortoise are but three. The red footed and the leopard tortoise are other popular species. In general tortoises are gentle creatures and used to be imported in huge numbers into the UK years ago and were frequently seen in back gardens. They hibernate annually usually between late October and March.
All varieties of tortoise are not to be thought of as easy pets to care for. When the pet tortoise trade was unregulated it is thought that more than 90% of all tortoises imported in any given year were dead within 2 years. The critical time when most tortoises died was during, or just after, hibernation.
Wild tortoise have been under threat world-wide for many years, mainly from the loss of habitat, but secondly from collecting for the pet trade. Fortunately, active steps to conserve these animals are being taken but much more needs to be done. The endless destruction of natural habitats must be controlled, and conservation reserves created where these animals can continue to breed and survive without human predation. If left in the wild or if properly cared for these wonderful reptiles can live for 100 years.
Most tortoise these days are captive bred and the generally high cost is a reflection on the conservation programme and prices of up to £200 for an 8cm. specimen is not uncommon.
